Ethiopian Lentil Salad Azifa: Spicy and Vegetarian

Here’s how you can get a few servings: Ethiopian Lentil Salad Azifa is vegetarian, fresh and wonderfully aromatic!

How about a salad today? And without green leaves, but with green lentils! Ethiopian Lentil Salad Azifa is pureed with tomatoes, onions and jalapeños and is vegan.

Ingredients for 2-4 servings:

  • 240 g of green lentils
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 large steak tomatoes
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 jalapeño (or ½ green pepper)
  • 2 spoons of olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons brown mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • salt
  • bell pepper

Approx per serving:

  • 384 calories
  • 12 grams of fat
  • 41 grams of carbohydrates
  • 24 grams of protein

Preparation time:

  • 10 minutes (plus 30 minutes of baking time)

And here’s how it’s done:


  1. Rinse the green lentils with cold water, drain and place in a bowl. Cover the lentils with water and boil. When the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the green lentils cook for 20-30 minutes. Then let it cool.
  2. Meanwhile, finely chop the red onion and tomato, peel and finely chop the garlic, deseed and mince the jalapeño. For a more spicy flavor, use green chilies instead of jalapeños.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a pan and lightly fry the onion and garlic. Then pour into a large bowl and add the cooled lentils.
  4. Add the tomato and jalapeño slices, crushed mustard seeds and lime juice, and season the salad with salt and pepper. Serve the finished lentil salad and enjoy!
